Dental Bonding

No one wants to have an imperfection in their smile. If you have a chipped tooth, you might even not smile often because you do not want anyone to notice that there is a chip. Here at Select Care Dental, we can help you with that chipped tooth. There is an easy and affordable way to fix many chips that could be just what you are looking for. The technique is known as bonding.

What Is Bonding, and How Can It Help?

There are several different things that we can do when a tooth is chipped. Sometimes we will apply a crown over the tooth. If the chip is severe, we might decide to extract the tooth and replace it with an implant. Bonding is another option, and it is often our first choice when someone had a chipped tooth.

With bonding, we will use a resin that is applied directly onto the tooth. We will make sure that the color matches that of your other teeth and the tooth that is being treated. We can then shape the resin so that it will look like a natural tooth. It is as simple as that.

Sometimes bonding can be used for more than a tooth that is chipped. In some cases, we can repair a tooth with a crack in it the same way. We will smooth it out so that the repair will not be noticeable. Often a cracked tooth needs to be extracted, and we are always looking for ways to avoid that. Bonding sometimes is one of the alternatives.

Sometimes we will use bonding to fill a cavity instead of using a traditional filling. The cavity needs to be the right size to be bonded. This is a technique that we will sometimes consider if a traditional filling would be obvious.

Bonding is also sometimes used for a tooth that did not form correctly, especially a tooth that is too small.

One of the things that are nice about bonding is that is a painless procedure. There is a very good chance that you will not even need anesthesia. That makes it safe and stress-free.

The main drawback of bonding is that it will not be as strong as your natural tooth. If you chew ice or like hard candy, you will want to avoid biting down on the tooth that was bonded. If the bonding does come loose, we can bond the tooth again. Otherwise, your bond should last for several years.

For the first two days after the bonding, avoid things that can stain your teeth such as coffee and smoking. After that, care for it just like the rest of your teeth.
